When GDP and Households Tell Different Stories

GDP per capita measures economic output per person, but it does not directly measure what households earn or consume. This study compares consumption per capita across selected economies, using purchasing power parity (PPP) adjustments to account for differences in price levels. Figures are expressed in constant 2021 international dollars, using the latest observation available for each economy when the study was prepared.

The research considers why multinational activity, resource industries and public service provision matter when interpreting these comparisons. It also discusses the limits of household final consumption expenditure (HFCE) and introduces actual individual consumption (AIC), which captures goods and services consumed by households regardless of whether households, governments or non-profit institutions pay for them.
